Samsung Outs a Worthy iPhone Rival - Galaxy S Android Phone

The first time I saw the Samsung Galaxy S on display at one of the phone shops, I couldn’t believe that I was actually holding a Samsung smartphone. But the Samsung brand gave it away. Indeed I was holding a Samsung phone - displaying a home screen with app icons similar to the iPhone or an Android phone. Was I impressed? - Certainly.

The Samsung Galaxy S was recently launched globally. And I wouldn’t be surprise why it is getting the news coverage that it certainly deserves. It is a full-featured, technically advanced smartphone featuring a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen. If phones with AMOLED screen blew your mind away, wait till you see the Samsung Galaxy S’ Super AMOLED screen.

Aside from this, the Samsung Galaxy S runs on a 1GHz app processor. This simply means that app switching is a breeze and running these apps are as smooth as silk.

The Samsung Galaxy S is a super multimedia machine on the go capable of displaying HD video on its high-resolution screen.

While I was playing around with the Samsung Galaxy S, I couldn’t help but noticed it striking resemblance to the iPodTouch. Both devices have curvy edges and the silver undertones in front. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S looks classic and the slightly smaller than the Xperia X10. However, the Xperia X10 has a more glossy appearance.

The Samsung Galaxy S runs Android 2.1, which is a good thing. Hopefully, update to Froyo 2.2 will be rolled out later this year.  With Android running, you’d have 7 home screen all in all to fill with Android apps. It also runs Samsung’s TouchWiz UI interface on top of Android.

Among its major features include:

  • instant access to weather, news, stocks, and scheduler

  • inter-device connectivity via DNLA technology

  • can be used as a digital photo frame, table clock, calendar and music station

  • Swype text input

And now for the Samsung Galaxy S’ specs:

  • Android 2.1 OS

  • 5MP camera with autofocus

  • support for various media formats such as MP4, WMV, MP3 and more

  • A-GPS

  • Augmented Reality with Layar Reality Browser

  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth

  • 2.5G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE)

  • 3G (HSDPA 7.2mbps, HSUPA 5.76mbps)

Sprint launched three new Android phones across a range of price points, all with the new Sprint ID interface software on board.

    • Samsung Transform: The Samsung Transform is the most powerful of the three new phones. A QWERTY slider, the Transform features an 800 MHz processor and dual cameras, a 3.2 megapixel shooter around back and a VGA camera up front for self-portraits and video conferencing. The Transform features a large, full-QWERTY keyboard that slides out from beneath the 3.5-inch screen. The phone will be available on 10/10 from Sprint for $150 with a contract agreement.
    • Sanyo Zio: The Sanyo Zio is a full touchscreen phone with a 3.5-inch display and a trackball just beneath the screen for navigating the interface. A 600 MHz processor drives the phone, which runs Android 2.1 with Sprint ID on top. That's a step up from the version released on Cricket, which runs Android 1.6. The Zio uses a 3.2 megapixel camera. The phone will be available on 10/10 for $100 with a contract.
    • LG Optimus S: As part of the new LG Optimus family, Sprint is launching the LG Optimus S with its own Sprint ID software built in. The Optimus S will launch three weeks after the other two Sprint ID Android phones, but it will run Android 2.2 instead of 2.1. The Optimus S runs on a 600 MHz processor, and the screen is a 3.2-inch display. The phone will be available first in black, then later in purple.
The LG Optimus S will ship with Android 2.2, but Sprint tells us the other two phones will receive a Froyo update in the future.

Samsung Champ receives the Hello Kitty makeover

Samsung Champ receives the Hello Kitty makeover

Although it's cuddly and cute, it's very rare for US consumers to see a handset that's completely branded from head-to-toe with Hello Kitty written all over it. Well, if you're a hardcore fan, you may want to check out the Samsung Champ which is the latest handset to receive the Hello Kitty makeover.

Launching over in Taiwan, the special edition of the Samsung Champ is decked out in an adorable white/pink color combination with the forever recognizable Hello Kitty logo on it. Not stopping at the exterior level, the handset even comes pre-loaded with an assortment of Hello Kitty animations and wallpapers to truly deck out the handset in Hello Kitty fashion.

Aside from that, you're treated to the usual list of features – like a 2.4” QVGA touchscreen, 1.3-megapixel camera, microSD card slot, Bluetooth, FM radio, Sound Alive 3D effects, 3.5mm headset jack, social networking integration, and TouchWiz Lite.

So if this is something your truly crave, you're going to have to import it – but it shouldn't be too bad since it's priced at NT$4,990 ($162).

Samsung S9110 Watch Phone

Samsung S9110 Watch Phone Available now
22nd July 2009 (Updated 31st July 2009(

You probably didn't know that you wanted a phone that you could wear as a watch, but Samsung and some other manufacturers seem to think that you do, and they have given us a preview of the Samsung S9110

Full technical details are not currently available for the S9110, but we do know that this phone is just under 12mm thick and has a 1.76 inch touchscreen display.

The S9110 comes with an MP3 player, Bluetooth and voice recognition support. Samsung say that the S9110 synchronises with Microsoft Outlook and you can even read your emails on it.

There's not much more to go on, except that the S9110 will cost about €450 when it goes on sale in France sometime this year. Presumably it will be available in other countries too, although perhaps you will need to find a specialist retailer.

It's all very clever, and while we admit that the S9110 would be a pretty cool thing to own.. we can't really see what the point is. We don't know exactly when the phone will be available, but rumours say that the S9110 should be out sometime this summer.

Update: We know know that the S9110 comes with a 630 mAh battery, voice recognition, measures 58 x 41 x 12mm and weighs 91 grams. The display is 176 x 220 pixels in 262,000 colours, and the S9110 supports dual-band 900 / 1800 MHz GSM and Bluetooth 2.1.

Samsung Omnia PRO (B7610)

Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 Available now
17th June 2009

Another addition to the Omnia family, the Samsung Omnia PRO B7610 is a Windows Mobile smartphone with a 3.5" 480 x 800 pixel display, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 5 megapixel camera, 3.5G support, WiFi and GPS.

We don't see this format of phone from Samsung very often, the last one we can remember is the f700. It looks very much more like an HTC handset than a Samsung. Confusingly for a smartphone, this Omnia PRO comes with a "B-series" model number rather than the more usual "I-series" that Samsung smartphones tend to use. Are Samsung making this up as they go along?

Samsung have put their 800 MHz processor at the heart of the Omnia PRO B7610. Although the actual speed of the processor is not strictly dependent on the clock rate, we're pretty sure that this will be faster than the 528 MHz one in the rival HTC Touch Pro2. The large display will be ideal for web browsing, and combine this with the large QWERTY keyboard and you have an impressive looking ultra-mobile computing device.

Samsung B7610 Omnia PRO The anticipated launch date of the Omnia PRO B7610 is October 2009, and although Samsung have indicated that this phone will ship with Windows Mobile 6.1, there should be an upgrade available to Windows Mobile 6.5 at about the time of launch.

The camera is good for a Windows Mobile device, the B7610 has a 5 megapixel unit with autofocus and dual LED flash, multishot and panoramic stitching, and video recording resolution is 720 x 480 pixels (we guess at 30 frames per second). The Omnia PRO B7610 can play back most major media files including MP3, Windows Media and DivX

Samsung Omnia PRO GPS is built in, and it comes with the Route 66 personal navigation package in certain regions. If you want a different SatNav package, then there is plenty of choice available for this platform. The large touch-sensitive display is ideal for use in this respect.

This is an HSDPA capable device, but Samsung are not clear about the maximum download speed, quoting it as either 3.6 Mbps or 7.2 Mbps. HSUPA doesn't seem to be supported, but WiFi is included as you might expect.

Windows Mobile comes with all the usual features, including integration with Microsoft Exchange, a choice of either Internet Explorer or Opera web browsers, and a good set of personal information management tools. Samsung say that the B7610 will ship with the TouchWiz interface, although the press photos appear to show a plain Windows Mobile 6.5 interface.

We don't know how much the Samsung Omnia PRO B7610 will cost, our guess is that it will retail SIM-free for something in the region of €600 to €700 when it hits the streets sometime in Q4 2009.
